  * it provides a systematic framework from which to navigate a problem

## four key stages:

1. investigate
   * develop a comprehensive design brief
   * identify and assess existing solutions
   * research and critique components and materials
   * assess sources of energy
2. devise
   * produce pictorial and orthographic projections
   * compare, analyse, and justify the final choice of design
3. produce
   * present specifications for the selected solution
   * develop a timeline
   * construct and test solutions as you go
4. evaluate
   * evaluate whether it meets the requirements of the design brief
   * whether it is safe, functional, and well-finished
   * whether there were modifications and changes to the design during production
